According to the National Institutes of Health, the level of normal body fat ranges from 21 to 31% for women and 14 to 25% for men.
This calculator will calculate your body fat percentage(BFP) using five methods.
- Body Fat (U.S. Navy Method)
- Body Fat (BMI method)
- Body Fat (Covert Bailey Method)
- Body Fat (Modified YMCA Method)
- Body Fat (YMCA method)
The results will be presented in a table of categories of fat percentage, in a table of ratios of a percentage of fat and method, in a graph of ranges with your body fat.
U.S. Navy Method (BFP)
Because members of the US Navy must meet certain fitness standards, a body fat calculator has been developed that accurately calculates body fat.
U.S. Navy formula for females: BFP = 163.205 * log_{10}(waist+hip-neck) - 97.684*log_{10}(height)+78.387 Note: All values are in inches.
U.S. Navy formula for males: BFP = 86.010 * log_{10}(waist - neck) - 70.041*log_{10}(height)+36.76 Note: All values are in inches.
Category | Man | Woman |
---|---|---|
● Low-level fat | < 2% | < 10% |
● Essential | 2% - 5% | 10% - 13% |
● Athletes | 6% - 13% | 14% - 20% |
● Fitness | 14% - 17% | 21% - 24% |
● Average | 18% - 24% | 25% - 31% |
● Obese | 25% < | 32% < |
BMI Method (BFP)
Another method for calculating an estimate of body fat percentage uses BMI.
BMI method for BFP formula for boys: BFP = 1.51*BMI - 1.7 * Age -2.2
BMI method for BFP formula for girls: BFP = 1.51*BMI - 1.7 * Age +1.4
BMI method for BFP formula for adult males: BFP = 1.20*BMI - 0.23 * Age -16.2
BMI method for BFP formula for adult females: BFP = 1.20*BMI - 0.23 * Age -5.4
Covert Bailey Method (BFP)
One of the newest methods to calculate body fat percentage was created by popular sports physician Covert Bailey. This calculation depends on age. In addition, it includes the circumference of the thigh and lower leg.
Covert Bailey formula for Men 30 years old or younger: BFP = Waist + 0.5 * Hips - 3 * Forearm - Wrist
Covert Bailey formula for Women 30 years old or younger: BFP = Hips + 0.8 * Thigh - 2 * Calf - Wrist
Covert Bailey formula for Men over age 30: BFP = Waist + 0.5 * Hips - 2.7 * Forearm - Wrist
Covert Bailey formula for Women over age 30: BFP = Hips + Thigh - 2 * Calf - Wrist
YMCA Method (BFP)
This method of body fat percentage calculation was developed by the youth volunteer organization "YMCA", for calculation, you will need to measure your waist and body weight.
YMCA Method formula for females: BFP = \left(\dfrac{4,15*waist-0,082*weight-76,76}{weight}\right)*100 Note: All values are in inches and pounds.
YMCA Method formula for males: BFP = \left(\dfrac{4,15*waist-0,082*weight-98,42}{weight}\right)*100 Note: All values are in inches and pounds.
Modified YMCA Method (BFP)
This method calculates the body fat percentage using more measurements. Measured:
- Wrist Circumference
- Waist (at navel)
- Hips (at the fullest point)
- Forearm Circumference
Modified YMCA formula for females: BFP = \left(\dfrac{0,268*weight - 0.318*wrist + 0.157*waist+0.245*Hips-0.434*forearm-8.987}{weight}\right)*100 Note: All values are in inches and pounds.
Modified YMCA formula for males: BFP = \left(\dfrac{4,15*waist-0,082*weight-94,42}{weight}\right)*100 Note: All values are in inches and pounds.
Body Fat Mass
Body Fat Mass Formula: BFM = BFP*Weight
Lean Body Mass
Lean Body Mass Formula: LBM = Weight-BFM
